Flushing
Your Money Down the Toilet
Don't waste anymore money on nutritional supplements
that don't work
By Gemma R Hughes, Exercise Physiologist

Do you take nutritional supplements? More than 50% of
Americans do (2). With thousands of different supplements available
choosing what to take can be extremely overwhelming, coupled with conflicting
information from friends, magazines and ads and the process becomes
confusing too.
Sadly, more than 98% of supplements are a complete waste of money.
They don’t absorb into your body and are literally flushed down
the toilet! On a much more serious note, many supplements contain high
levels of toxicity (4). Too much iron and the retinal form of vitamin
A can build up in the human body over time and cause adverse reactions
such as joint pain, abdominal problems, shortness of breath, birth defects
(1), blurred vision, osteoporosis (5) and more.
With no regulation in the United States supplement companies can put
whatever they want into their bottles and market them as they please.
With a minimum order of 100 bottles I could order my very own line of
supplements right now.
Without droning on and on about why some supplements are better than
others (if you’re interested just let me know and I’ll tell
you) I want to provide you with a list of supplement companies that
are effective and safe so you can avoid all the worthless products that
aren’t doing you much (if any) good..
An independent Canadian company, NutriSearch Corporation, did a study
involving over 2000 supplements from the US and Canada (4). Products
containing excessive potency exceeding Upper Limit safety recommendations
established by the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine,
in Washington D.C. (4) were immediately eliminated. The remaining 1591
products (notice that over 400 products were not even safe enough to
continue testing!) were then rated based on 18 specific Health Support
Criteria (listed below) and given a star rating between zero and five
(zero possessing few, if any health support characteristics and five
possessing health support characteristics that far exceed other products
on the market) (4).
When reading the Comparative Guide I was not shocked to see that the
most popular supplement companies have ratings of 2 ½ or less.
Companies such as Atkins, Bronson Laboratories, Centrum, Country Life,
CVS, GNC, Great American, Kal, Kroger, Nature’s Life, Nikken,
One A Day, Rite Aid, Safeway, Solaray, Solgar, Target, and Walgreens
averaged ratings of 1 or zero. I also noticed that just because one
product from a company received a 4 star rating or higher didn’t
necessarily mean that other products from the same company were highly
rated. Vitamin Shoppe, for example, received a 4 ½ star rating
for its Life Essentials Multi. Of seven other products tested from Vitamin
Shoppe one received a 3 star rating and the others were a 2 or less.
Want to know how your supplement rates? Write to me, I’d be glad
to look up your supplement and let you know. Just email me at fitnessbygemma@yahoo.com.
This is where clients ask me what I take. First let me mention that
I didn’t even bother looking at anything rated less than 5 stars!
I take my health, my body and my future way too seriously to be messing
around with anything less than the BEST! So I take USANA
products.
USANA offers a complete
line of supplements with sound scientific research to back up their
ingredients and independent testing to support their quality. They are
one of the best valued of all the 5 star rated products below with the
Essentials (includes a bottle of Antioxidant Multi and a bottle of Chelated
Minerals) averaging only $1.60 per day. Plus I signed up online for
the autoship program and save 10% off every order making it even more
economical. Their Health Pak 100 is a 5 star rated product that includes
numerous USANA products that
had to be tested and evaluated on the 18 criteria.
I recommend USANA but wanted
to provide you with a complete list of the best supplements on the market.
Please quit wasting your money on empty nutritional supplements. The
high quality products are more costly than the one’s you’re
picking up from the grocery store, but you are literally just flushing
those cheap products down the toilet. Do the math and figure out what
your health is worth to you. If you could have more energy, decrease
your risk factors for all major health issues, including heart disease,
diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer’s, MS, cancer and more, sleep
better, recover faster from your work outs, have less aches and pains
and increase your overall quality of life what price is too much for
all of this?
I find it so frustrating when people tell me they can’t afford
to buy the high quality supplements they need. I start to do the math:
2 coffee’s a day to stay awake avg. $5.00/day
Allergy meds $1.67/day
Pain relievers for aching body $ .20/day
________
$192.36/month *
* Then you have to factor in missed days of work when sick and/or exhausted,
doctors visits for colds due to low immune function, antibiotic costs
for cold, then over the counter yeast infection medication to treat
the infection caused by the antibiotics, over the counter cough syrup,
cold meds, all the bottles of useless supplements you’ve been
buying at the drug store, and most importantly the cost of all the things
you’re not doing in life because you don’t feel good enough
to do them.
Personally, I’d rather work an extra few hours each week to afford
the best quality, most effective product than waste any more money on
rubbish! I challenge you to make your health more of a priority. Try
one of the superior products below and see if you feel the difference
(note that changes often occur gradually so don’t expect an overnight
sensation).
The 18 Health Support Criteria that these supplements were rated on
are as follows:
1. Completeness
2. Potency
3. Mineral Forms
4. Bioactivity of Vitamin E
5. Gemma Tocopherol
6. Antioxidant Support
7. Bone Health
8. Heart Health
9. Liver Health (detoxification)
10. Metabolic Health (glucose control)
11. Ocular Health
12. Methylation Support
13. Lipotropic Factors
14. Inflammation Control
15. Glyceration Control
16. Bioflavonoid Profile
17. Phenolic Compounds
18. Potential Toxicities
(A complete explanation of each of these criteria can be found in Nutrisearch
Comparitive Guide to Nutritional Supplementsä Consumer Edition
(http://nutrisearch.ca/). Or contact me (fitnessbygemma@yahoo.com) to
order as I can get a better price when ordering in bulk).
What follows is a list of the companies and products that received
a 5 star, 4 ½ star and 4 star rating. I think that anything less
than that is not worth a darn and I certainly am not going to consider
putting anything but the BEST into my body.
