Give Your Fitness Routine a JOLT!
by Gemma Hughes, Exercise Physiologist

Do you love being in shape but are getting bored with your repetitive routine? Want to do something new but not quite sure what to do, or how to do it safely and effectively?

It's time to give your routine a JOLT!

Here are some great ways to do just that:

Hire a Personal Trainer for a few sessions. Let them know that you're looking for new and different ways to add variety into your workouts. Take notes in each session and ask them to be really specific about form and purpose. You're paying for the session, be sure to get exactly what you want out of it.

Take a fitness vacation. On a good fitness retreat you'll be exercising for the greater part of the day. To prevent boredom these companies have multiple trainers taking you through a wide variety of activities, it's a great way to be exposed to many different types of fitness in a short amount of time.

Take Group Fitness classes. Ask the front desk what time the next class starts, and take it. Even if it's Senior Ballet, get in there and don't come out until you've learned something new.

Join a Bootcamp. Bootcamp style fitness programs dish up raw, butt kicking exercises that challenge strength, agility, endurance and speed. Incorporate a few bootcamp drills to a regular workout to take your fitness to a whole new level.

Get curious. Go over to the machines in the gym you've never used before. Read the directions, ask for assistance and start to incorporate them into your routine. It's there, so use it.

Join a local team. Local leagues are always in need of players, even bad ones. Soccer, softball and bowling are just a few ideas. Not only will you use your body in different ways, you'll also meet other active people who may be able to help you learn other ways to shake up your fitness routine.

Train for a race. There are hundreds of 5K's, 10K's, half marathons and triath-a-lons in the US each month. Find upcoming events online or at your locally owned sports stores. Pick a realistic time span to train and register for an event.

Or take a class/course. Salsa lessons, martial arts, sexy dance fitness classes, etc are available all you have to do is find one in your area.

These are just a few ideas on how to give your fitness routine a jolt. There are so many ways to add variety, be creative and be brave, but also be safe and educate yourself first to avoid injury. And remember that you'll probably be sore from doing a new activity so go easy the first time.
